William Castle was truly skilled at creating spectacle, and this film represents his most impressive achievement. He had a fondness for novelties, exemplified here by Percepto, a system installed under theater seats designed to deliver a sudden electrical buzz during the most intense moments—a way to heighten the experience for viewers! Vincent Price is wonderfully unhinged as a pathologist who believes that fear manifests into a tangible being, and that it can only be vanquished through screaming. He intends to obtain someone who has died of terror so he can prove his idea, which turns out to be surprisingly easy given the people around him. It’s an outlandish horror film that moves rapidly through sequences depicting executions, what appears to be a negative experience with LSD (a first for cinema), marital infidelity, a silent movie house screening *Tol'Able David*, youthful romance, and a monster of questionable quality. Despite the story being obviously ridiculous, it’s an entertaining and exciting experience, even if you don’t have the possibility of getting shocked!
