Anthony O’Brien directs The Timber, which he wrote alongside Steve Allrich and Colin Ossiander. James Ransome, Josh Peck, and William Gaunt lead the cast; Tim Borquez provides the music and Phil Parmet is responsible for the cinematography. The film follows two brothers as they travel through a snowy landscape on some kind of assignment... The Timber falls into that strange category of films that leaves you puzzled but also captivated. A quick glance at online reviews reveals it elicits strong reactions, with people either passionately hating or loving it. Depending on your perspective, it could be seen as an overlooked and undervalued artistic Western, or simply a poorly assembled and confusing experience. Ransome and Peck portray the brothers pursuing their father (Gaunt), who has become unstable after his gold mine in the Yukon dried up. This backstory isn't immediately clear and is rather obscure, almost lost within the surreal atmosphere. Along the way, they run into difficulties and unusual people, while also grappling with memories from their past—or perhaps those are actually ghosts! The story feels disjointed, interrupted by lengthy stretches of silence that feel unnecessary, and there are moments where it seems something should be present but isn’t, creating an impression of a film shot spontaneously with lots of improvisation. It's possible the filmmakers intentionally aimed for a dreamlike, apocalyptic Western similar to Apocalypse Now, and we simply aren’t grasping their vision. Or maybe they bit off more than they could chew. Regardless, it is beautifully filmed; a snowy Western set in the Carpathian Mountains is something special. It’s certainly an interesting production, but at the same time, it's hard to wholeheartedly suggest watching it. Take a gamble and see what happens... 4/10
