The Three Musketeers provides an enjoyable viewing experience. I seem to really appreciate this story, considering that I also rated and enjoyed the 1993 version directed by Stephen Herek and produced by Disney – in fact, I even prefer this one! This 2011 adaptation begins exceptionally well; the initial scenes were very much to my taste with their humor and editing. It’s true that it doesn't consistently maintain that high level of quality throughout, but overall I certainly found it entertaining. With the earlier film, I had mixed feelings about the cast, but this time around I enjoyed watching everyone onscreen. I wasn't sure Matthew Macfadyen would be a good fit for this kind of role, but he acted skillfully. Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans join Macfadyen in playing the main characters, also to a positive effect. The well-known D’Artagnan is portrayed by Logan Lerman here, and I was quite impressed – it's a strong performance from someone I hadn’t seen much of previously, apart from in 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief'. Mads Mikkelsen, Milla Jovovich, and Orlando Bloom lead the supporting cast effectively. I will say that Freddie Fox and his character’s role in the story didn’t grab my attention as much, though Fox himself is perfectly adequate. Christoph Waltz appears alongside Fox but is very forgettable... it's a rather disappointing use of Waltz’s (considerable) talents, now that I think about it. James Corden also felt off – and I generally like him as an actor. I haven’t checked the average rating yet, but I imagine it will be quite low. It’s often easy to tell which films won't have done well online. As always, opinions vary. I personally had a pleasant time with this film and would happily watch it again if given the chance.
