I never quite grasped why Michael York became a star, however, he’s surprisingly effective as “D'Artagnan.” He portrays a naive young man who travels to Paris with the goal of emulating his father and becoming one of the king’s musketeers. His initial experiences aren't exactly promising; he finds himself challenged to duels by "Athos" (Oliver Reed), "Porthos" (Frank Finlay), and “Aramis” (Richard Chamberlain). Fortunately, the Cardinal’s men step in, and soon the four are united with the motto "one for all....”. “D'Artagnan” takes up residence with the timid "Bonacieux" (Spike Milligan) and his unexpected wife "Constance" (Raquel Welch), who works as a seamstress for the Queen (Geraldine Chaplin). The Queen is walking a precarious path between her marriage to the King (Jean-Pierre Cassel) and her affection for British Prime Minister, the Duke of Buckingham (Simon Ward). Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston), known for his cunning, employs "Rochefort" (Christopher Lee) and “Milady” (Faye Dunaway) to devise a scheme that aims to eliminate the Queen and undermine the musketeers, ultimately placing the king under his control. The film doesn’t take itself seriously, which makes this entertaining adventure move quickly from the start, and Milligan's performance is especially memorable, as are the contributions of the long-suffering “Planchet” (Roy Kinnear) and Frank Finlay, who always delivers. There’s plenty of humorous moments, some clever lines, and generally everyone seems to be having a great time with sword fights, political maneuvering, seduction, scheming, drinking wine, and so on. It's amusingly Heston who appears the most serious actor in the group—his role demands it—but Reed and Lee are clearly enjoying themselves as well, and I did too. This is genuinely enjoyable entertainment!
