This film has absolutely no connection to Dumas’ novel; it’s important to acknowledge that before considering this Disney-esque version of the story. Chris O'Donnell, appearing excessively good-looking as "D'Artagnan," comes to Paris with a goal: to emulate his father and become one of the King’s Musketeers. However, there’s an immediate obstacle – Cardinal Richelieu (played by Tim Curry) has ensured that this military group is dissolved and discredited. A series of unfortunate events leads him to challenge three former musketeers—Messieurs Aramis, Porthos, and Athos—to duels; they ultimately fight against the Cardinal's men and come together. Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt portray his companions as they try to revive their unit while also preventing an English invasion and possibly stopping a plot to overthrow the young King Louis. The movie moves along at a decent speed, with lots of action sequences, and Curry seems to be enjoying himself immensely playing the villainous church official. Nevertheless, it’s a fairly forgettable reimagining that doesn't capture the appeal or cleverness found in either the 1948 version or Richard Lester’s 1973 adaptation.
