This new BBC series was disappointing, though it’s evident some money went into the costumes and filming locations. Frankly, it's just awful! I typically enjoy watching James Cosmo’s performances, but his portrayal of Cardinal Richelieu felt completely off; he seemed lost. His attempts to gain control lead to the disbanding of the Musketeers. Luckily, "Porthos," played by David O’Mahony, "Athos" portrayed by Ben Freeman, and "Aramis" brought to life by Jake J. Meniani, join forces with eager newcomer "D'Artagnan" (Malachi Pullar-Latchman) to recount a story of courage and faithfulness against difficult circumstances. They have the task of safeguarding the king (Tim Taplin) from Cardinal Richelieu’s machinations, along with his assistant "Rochefort" (James Oliver Wheatley), and the treacherous "Milady" (Preeya Kalidas). On top of that, they need to convince viewers why anyone would want to spend a hundred minutes watching this badly directed, poorly written production that feels like a school project. Christopher Cook provides a small bright spot with his score for the closing credits on what is otherwise a low-budget drama lacking creativity and acting ability. It’s headed straight for late-night streaming.
