It was disheartening to find this film fell short, even considering the talented performers and filmmakers involved, as well as its initial promise. I had genuine anticipation for this picture. How could things go wrong with Pierce Brosnan in the central role and John McTiernan directing a stylish crime story? Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The Thomas Crown Affair felt more like a romantic drama with an art theft plot layered on top. The film’s music was grating; it sounded like low-budget background music that detracted from the experience rather than adding to it. There were also some lengthy and uncomfortable scenes featuring sex and nudity, which seemed entirely out of place. I generally find those kinds of scenes superfluous, but these felt particularly awkward. It's surprising how often this film appears on lists of the best heist movies ever made, given its shortcomings.
