A movie centering on a young, pregnant bride who is only fourteen years old had the potential to be mishandled easily. Thankfully, Mayfair delivers an exceptional film; her telling of May’s story possesses such refinement and sensitivity that it seems uniquely attributable to a Vietnamese perspective. The subject matter is treated with deference while simultaneously revealing the disturbing nature of what's happening. It was captivating and deeply emotional, and I am eager to watch it again soon.
