This installment follows a familiar formula, though it introduces a female lead, and it’s executed competently. A paleontologist from the United States (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is asked to go with a doctor and his helper (Ulrich Thomsen and Eric Christian Olsen) to an Antarctic research station in Norway. Their mission: investigate a massive object found beneath the ice, along with a frozen body discovered nearby. Bringing that body inside proves to be a serious error. “The Thing” (2011) serves as a prequel to the 1982 film starring Kurt Russell. The conclusion sets up events for that earlier movie, which had an entirely male cast. This production tries to address what some consider a shortcoming by including Winstead and another woman in the story, but don’t anticipate any romantic storylines because its runtime of 1 hour, 43 minutes is six minutes less than the original, leaving only room to concentrate on the survival struggles at the isolated outpost. Essentially, it's a reimagining with a female protagonist, similar to “Alien” and “Aliens.” The somewhat silly close-up of jaws appears again, which demonstrates an adherence to established elements. Because the 1982 film is held in such high regard, this one was unlikely to satisfy everyone. Nevertheless, it's quite comparable, and I liked seeing Winstead; also, there’s a change in the final section that I won’t spoil. Filming took place at Pinewood Toronto Studios close to the waterfront in Port Lands, as well as nearby Stouffville and the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, which is about two hours east of Toronto. Exterior scenes were filmed in British Columbia. GRADE: B
