I hadn't managed to watch this Cecil B. DeMille series from beginning to end until quite recently. It’s certainly impressive visually, with lovely colors and costumes, though that doesn't fully compensate for the fact that it feels rather conventional and overdone. Sir Cedric Hardwicke is on hand at the start as Seti, but after his appearance, the film noticeably declines in quality, essentially turning into a showcase for Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner portraying Moses and Ramses. The story, which focuses heavily on a somewhat weak depiction of brotherly affection that devolves into animosity and outright conflict, feels overly reliant on its dialogue. Edward G. Robinson and Vincent Price contribute some moments of threat; the visual effects are handled skillfully—adding impact to the plagues—and Elmer Bernstein’s music is effective, but ultimately it's just a lengthy narrative that leans more toward biblical storytelling than truly epic filmmaking.
