This was fantastic. It presents a disturbing and unsettling narrative centered around a man, an eye, a killing, and some remarkable vocal work by James Mason. Similar to other characters driven to madness, this individual felt entirely rational as he started experiencing problems with one of his older neighbors. This neighbor had never caused him any trouble and likely wasn't even conscious of his presence, but slowly, this fixation grew to overwhelming importance. As his worry built up, his thoughts moved toward more extreme measures – though is there truly a solution for clearing this mental mark? It’s the sort of richly detailed and frightening animation that could have served as inspiration for a Roger Corman or Tim Burton film, and with the Kremenliev score contributing significantly to the increasingly frantic mood, it's unlike anything you’d typically encounter in standard animated entertainment. Poe understood how to establish a setting, letting our own imaginations guide us, and through the skillful application of color – particularly the harlequin design near the conclusion – he produced something that must have been quite startling when released in 1953.
