Elisa Schlott’s portrayal of “Rosa” finds her newly arrived at her in-laws' home in Eastern Prussia, eager for updates about her husband who is fighting near Russia, when someone knocks on the door. A soldier insists she accompany him into the nearby forest, a place rumored to be Adolf Hitler’s headquarters. Seven women are gathered, and they initially can’t understand their purpose—it seems to involve simply eating meals that would otherwise be considered luxuries. The chef, Boris Aljinovic, explains that they're taste-testing food destined for Hitler’s table. This revelation isn’t exactly appetizing, but the stern “Lt. Ziegler,” played by Max Riemelt, quickly silences any complaints. He also becomes infatuated with “Rosa,” and their relationship soon turns physical, revealing aspects of a man with a troubling history. The other women are wary of “Rosa” because she's from Berlin, leading them to suspect an air of superiority. However, “Elfriede,” portrayed by Alma Hasun, seems more accepting—until it becomes apparent that she carries her own dark secrets, which threaten everyone. As the failed Von Stauffenberg plot escalates tensions, and news of Germany’s impending defeat and Soviet advances spreads panic, “Rosa” must carefully consider her next move. The film draws on historical accounts of food tasters and effectively portrays the dangers they faced daily—as well as those posed by bees. Unfortunately, the narrative becomes diluted with numerous side stories that are adequate but lack originality. Schlott succeeds in conveying a sense of conflict and anxiety, though the other characters aren't developed enough to significantly enrich the story, which runs just over two hours. Despite this, there’s clear effort evident in the production, and the frequent “Heil Hitlers” offer insight into the strength of Hitler’s cult of personality, even among his most devoted followers who sensed the regime’s impending downfall. Trimming approximately twenty minutes and concentrating more on her character and the escalating paranoia of the state could have elevated this film considerably.
