"The Tasters" presents an engrossing yet sorrowful account of the young women who had the grim responsibility of sampling Adolf Hitler’s meals to check for poison. Although rooted in actual events, the movie does employ some artistic license. It's said that only one of these women lived to recount her experiences at 95 years old; the others supposedly perished, shot by approaching Russian forces during World War II. The commonplace act of sharing a meal is twisted into something deeply disturbing and suffocating. These women are compelled to consume portions prepared for Hitler or risk immediate violence—and potential death if the food has been contaminated. It might be delicious, but it’s impossible to savor. This highlights the brutal impact of absolute power. The lives of several young women, some with families, are consistently disregarded and endangered to serve a single, older man. Ultimately, this is an unusual film that turns something familiar into a profoundly upsetting experience. It's certainly worth seeing.
