This is a really good film, possibly my favorite Bollywood movie I’ve seen yet. *The Tashkent Files* doesn't feel like your average Hindi production, at least not based on what I’m familiar with. The story unfolds deliberately, and it carefully examines the details without forcing in any musical numbers. I found myself completely engaged throughout, even though its length is a bit long—144 minutes. The acting is quite strong across the board. Shweta Basu Prasad really stands out; she brings a lot of feeling to her part as Raagini. Mithun Chakraborty is very easy to like in his role as Shyam and helps keep things progressing when the attention shifts away from Prasad. Naseeruddin Shah is the most memorable among the supporting cast, who are all enjoyable to watch. I didn’t know much about Lal Bahadur Shastri before seeing this, so it was fascinating to pick up bits of information about that time in India's history—even knowing there are some contested aspects and the typical artistic liberties films take. I believe they presented it effectively, regardless. I watched it on Zee Cinema here in the UK, and their broadcast had a lot of censorship blurring out names, places, and organizations. It ended up being kind of funny trying to figure out what was hidden! Seriously though, this is absolutely worth checking out.
