The robbery of the stagecoach by "Usher" (Richard Boone) and his companions takes an unexpected turn when the timid passenger “Mims” (John Hubbard) impulsively claims that his wife, "Doretta" (Maureen O'Sullivan), possesses considerable wealth and that her father, a copper mine owner, would gladly pay handsomely for her safe return. Cleverly, "Usher" dispatches Mims and "Chink" (Henry Silva) to parley with the prospective benefactor, choosing instead to wait alongside “Brennan” (Randolph Scott), who had recently lost his horse and was now an unwilling passenger on this doomed journey. During the wait, the interactions between these men, as well as those between "Brennan" and "Doretta"—who is beginning to recognize her husband’s unpleasant nature—undergo a noticeable shift. The former develops into a gripping psychological contest that seems destined for confrontation, while the latter hints at a possible romance, despite her reservations about abandoning her deceitful husband. Though action sequences are present, the film's strength lies in the carefully crafted development of the bond between Scott and Boone, who consistently brought an unsettling presence to his roles without resorting to physical aggression. Hubbard is also effective, portraying obsequiousness that is particularly irritating, and O’Hara provides a portrayal of “Doretta” that surpasses the typical helpless female character often found in this type of story. There's considerable intelligence at work here, and while I felt the ending fell short, it remains a distinctive and well-told tale.
