This is an excellent Western from the nineteen fifties, featuring Randolph Scott, Richard Boone, and Maureen O'Sullivan. A man who used to manage a ranch (Randolph Scott) along with passengers on a stagecoach—including Maureen O’Sullivan—find themselves in danger because of three violent criminals (Richard Boone, Henry Silva, and Skip Homeier). “The Tall T” (1957) is a well-made Western from the fifties that casts Randolph Scott as a heroic figure. It's become something of a cult film, considered a top example of a classic Western collaboration between director Budd Boetticher and Scott. The initial story came from Elmore Leonard, which helps explain why it has things in common with “Hombre” (1967); Richard Boone is even in both films as the main outlaw. You can also see connections to Scott’s earlier film, "Hangman's Knot" (1952), since they were filmed in the same location and have similar plot points. I was surprised not to immediately place Maureen O'Sullivan, who appeared twenty-three years after her peak physical condition as seen in “Tarzan and His Mate” (1934). The script has the men repeatedly describe her as "plain" or an “old maid,” but she looks quite attractive later in the film when her hair is loose. Really, most men back then would have given anything to win her affection. The movie moves quickly at a length of one hour and eighteen minutes, and it was filmed in Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, California. GRADE: B+/A-
