Following their defeat in the American Civil War, brothers Ben (Clark Gable) and Clint (Cameron Mitchell) intended to rob wealthy businessman Stark (Robert Ryan). However, they ended up assisting him on a difficult cattle drive, transporting steers from Texas, where they were inexpensive, to Montana, where their value could increase significantly. During this journey, the brothers encounter the determined Nella (Jane Russell), who quickly develops a strong connection with Gable, adding further complications to an already dangerous undertaking. The narrative proves to be quite entertaining, as the challenges faced by those on the drive—including confrontations with angry Sioux and a harsh landscape—create a thrilling storyline. Gable delivers a solid performance, and Ryan is also memorable in a captivating role. The script shows some care in its construction; certain exchanges are sharp, and the playful interactions between Gable and Russell provide moments of genuine amusement. Its length does become an issue, though – there are sections where the story drags considerably, and I felt that while acceptable, Jane Russell’s casting wasn't ideal for the role; she embodies a spirited character but lacks a certain spark. Nevertheless, it stands among the better films in its category, offering plenty to engage with and showcasing impressive, sweeping cinematography.
