Raoul Walsh’s The Tall Men features Clark Gable, Jane Russell, Cameron Mitchell, and Robert Ryan. William A. Bacher and William B. Hawks produced the film for 20th Century Fox, based on a novel by Heck Allen (writing as Clay Fisher). Frank S. Nugent and Sydney Boehm adapted the story for the screen. Filmed in Durango, Leo Tover’s cinematography showcases the CinemaScope/DeLuxe production, accompanied by a score from Victor Young. The film is set in Montana Territory, 1866. A story of tall men—and long shadows." The Tall Men possesses an undeniable sense of competence, evident in Walsh’s assured direction and the effective writing. It's a Western that doesn't try to be anything it isn't. The expansive landscapes are rendered beautifully, and despite Russell’s somewhat understated acting style, the cast lends authenticity to both the cattle drive and the romantic elements of the plot. While action is not abundant, the film succeeds thanks to its well-developed characters and the scenery that surrounds them. There's even a good deal of humor to be found, an area where Russell proves her worth (and there’s also a scene designed to elicit some male attention). The comedy especially works when she interacts with Gable, who seems genuinely pleased to portray the rough, tough, and playful Ben Allison. It is certainly dialogue-heavy; extended conversations between the main characters exist, but these all contribute to the story and are handled skillfully by Walsh, keeping the narrative moving forward. It's a consistently enjoyable film, though it runs a bit too long. 6.5/10
