It’s surprising to me how little I knew about Broderick Crawford’s involvement with this movie, but he delivers a strong performance. He portrays "Augusto," heading up a group of con artists who target those most easily taken advantage of. They don’t hesitate to exploit everyday people and come up with clever schemes. The film unfolds against the setting of post-war Italy, which contributes to a sense of disillusionment in how the story and characters evolve. Crawford has good chemistry with Richard Basehart, who plays "Carlo," though Crawford's role is clearly the most memorable. While some aspects of the movie fall into familiar crime noir territory, the cinematography – combining starkness with beauty – and Nino Rota’s excellent music elevate it considerably. I didn't care for how things wrapped up; the resolution felt too simple, too foreseeable, and ultimately diminished Crawford's otherwise complex portrayal. The film manages to evoke emotion at times while also including a touch of humor, revealing an unexpected level of skill in the lead actor.
