Being in a relaxed situation with my significant other, soaking up sun, swimming, and enjoying intimacy, I doubt I’d be thrilled by the sudden appearance of an ex and their child. What's even stranger is that “Marianne” (Romy Schneider) has apparently extended an invitation for “Harry” (Maurice Ronet) and “Pénélope” (Jane Birkin) to join "Jean-Paul" (Alain Delon) at the villa, leaving him bewildered. Whether it’s a form of retribution or simply driven by desire, “Jean-Paul,” feeling displaced, quickly develops an affection for the young girl while her father makes his feelings known regarding “Marianne” with obvious flirtation. As the sun shines and drinks are consumed freely, the atmosphere becomes strained as jealousy emerges in a rather unpleasant way. It explores how fleeting human connections can be, touches on the superficiality of attractiveness, and demonstrates the impermanence of "love," with all four characters embodying the power of temptation effectively. The script provides concise but impactful dialogue that successfully communicates the escalating emotions, while the cinematography beautifully showcases the setting and their exposed physiques. The ending brought to mind JB Priestley’s “An Inspector Calls,” as detective “Lévêque” (Paul Crauchet) attempts to understand a perplexing situation. This film possesses an undeniable allure and exhibits a certain elegance.
