7/10 · Feb 10, 2023

The film centers around sisters Sara (Manal Issa) and Yusra (Nathalie Issa), who share a deep desire to compete for Syria in the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro. Their father serves as their coach and guide, pushing them intensely; however, their aspirations are threatened when an explosion damages their swimming pool, narrowly avoiding tragedy. Despite this frightening event, the family resolves to seek assistance from their cousin Nizar (Ahmed Malek) and, with some money they’ve managed to acquire, attempt a journey from Syria to Germany, where they intend to continue training. The problem is that they lack proper documentation, so after an initial flight to Istanbul, they fall into the hands of human traffickers who show little regard for their well-being. A significant portion of this engaging film presents some difficult scenes, portraying the challenges faced by the three as they try to evade both natural dangers and authorities in pursuit of their objective – sometimes facing considerable personal risk. The story is based on actual events, so while there’s no real danger to the characters onscreen, it effectively demonstrates just how hazardous such a journey can be; revealing the unscrupulousness and exploitation some individuals display towards those in desperate situations, as well as highlighting the remarkable resilience of the human spirit when confronted with seemingly impossible obstacles. Matthias Schweighöfer delivers noteworthy support in the role of "Sven," and the film offers a skillfully produced and paced account of how these two girls navigated their ordeal. The cinematography often feels very personal, occasionally exposing less appealing aspects of the sisters’ personalities – but this ultimately contributed to the sense of realism within this powerful depiction that undeniably broadens one's perspective.
