What makes this gentle animated film so appealing is how universal its narrative feels. The story centers on a young boy deeply devoted to the Montreal Canadiens hockey team, but it’s easily relatable to anyone who feels strongly about supporting their local sports franchise and wanting to show their allegiance. He plays games with his buddies, all wearing identical sweaters—except his proudly displays the number 9 of Maurice Richard. However, his sweater is looking worn, so his mother, a fan of ordering from catalogs, arranges for a new one. His joy quickly changes to dismay when he finds that she accidentally sent him a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey instead. There’s no way he'll wear it… At least, that’s what he thinks, until his mom insists and soon he’s having a major outburst, resulting in being sent to church to seek forgiveness from God. Except, during his prayer, he asks for one hundred million…? The animation itself isn't particularly striking, but the story really connects with you. As kids, we all had our own intense priorities and were certainly able to have impressive (and unappreciative) fits when things didn’t go our way—particularly if it meant clashing with others. It's shared with a kind of cheerful and slightly self-conscious affection by the narrator as he recalls an experience from his childhood, and it’s definitely worth ten minutes of your time.
