Charles Laughton delivers a remarkable performance in this suspenseful story about a man trapped in a joyless marriage with a difficult woman, "Cora," convincingly played by Rosalind Ivan. Her constant complaining has pushed their son to leave home. After he encounters a young woman named “Mary” (Ella Raines), his wife decides she will sabotage both their connection and his professional life, prompting him to take action against her—permanently! Henry Daniell is effective as the wary "Gilbert Simmons," and Stanley Ridges provides solid support as "Insp. Huxley," who must look into this situation while the plot progresses smoothly until a surprising conclusion emerges. I’ve yet to come across a disappointing film featuring Laughton.
