This movie, *The Surfer*, feels custom-made for Nicolas Cage! I found it very entertaining; he’s fantastic from beginning to end, and the supporting actors are quite good too. I often find myself frustrated when films rely on violent characters as villains, but this one handles them well—they're believable enough while also seeming clearly present just to cause trouble for the central character; the performers do a solid job with those roles. While Cage is undeniably the focus, I appreciated watching Nic Cassim and Julian McMahon as well. As you’d anticipate from a psychological thriller, the story delves deeply into those themes. It does wander somewhat in the middle section, but it ultimately pays off. The music is superb, and that along with most other aspects of the film suggests considerable care and attention to detail went into its creation. The movie has an appealing visual style, which would be meaningless if the narrative wasn't captivating—fortunately, it absolutely is.
