With her husband, Clovis (William Atherton), behind bars, Lou Jean (Goldie Hawn) finds herself at risk of losing custody of their son through adoption. Refusing to accept this outcome, she orchestrates his escape from prison so they can retrieve their child and flee to Mexico. However, their plans quickly unravel when they find themselves in a commandeered police car driven by Officer Slide (Michael Sacks). The police, led by the perceptive Capt. Tanner (Ben Johnson), respond with force, escalating the situation into a nationwide chase involving nearly every law enforcement vehicle available. As they travel further, their situation worsens, yet unexpectedly, they forge a connection with their hostage and begin to evoke empathy from those pursuing them. While occasionally absurd and undeniably lengthy, the film highlights Goldie Hawn’s talent – both as an actress capable of carrying a story and as someone possessing impeccable comedic timing. There are moments of genuine humor, although some instances feel like simple slapstick. The movie also provides opportunities to flesh out certain characters, including those played by Sacks and Johnson, which I appreciated as the narrative progressed. Based on actual events, the ending is somewhat constrained but the overall experience remains diverting.
