Vilmos Zsigmond’s cinematography stands out in Steven Spielberg's initial theatrical feature. The movie has a shifting feel; it seems to be a road picture, though also something like a sad comedy involving car crashes, and the story is rooted in actual events. Lou Jean Sparrow Poplin, portrayed by Goldie Hawn, secures her husband Clovis’s (William Atherton) release from prison only shortly before he was scheduled to go free. This action is taken with the goal of rescuing their child who faces potential adoption proceedings. They then abduct a police officer, which triggers a chase involving law enforcement and news reporters. Goldie Hawn's performance as Lou Jean is sharp, but her character also acts in ways that seem thoughtless. The narrative could have benefited from further development; nevertheless, Spielberg created a well-made film.
