This movie, *'The Substance,'* is intense. It’s the kind of film that required some time to process before I could even begin writing about it. Honestly, I don’t know where to start. The whole thing feels extreme from its opening moments until the very end of its 140-minute length; there are certain sequences that were genuinely difficult to watch play out! I believe *'Crimes of the Future,'* which came out in 2022, is the only other body horror film I’ve seen. I thought it was decent enough, but felt a little too contrived for shock value. This movie from 2024 has plenty of that, if not even more, yet somehow it fits perfectly within the overall presentation. The narrative itself is captivating, even if you disregard all the extreme elements. It's definitely not one of those films where style overshadows substance. The core plot isn’t groundbreaking, admittedly, but the way it’s presented and brought to life is remarkable—every detail feels meticulously designed. Demi Moore delivers an exceptional performance! I haven’t seen much of her work, particularly anything released after 2002, but she's superb here. Margaret Qualley seems almost the opposite in terms of experience, yet she’s just as impressive – a truly great showing. If you hear people advising caution before watching this film, listen to them! Even with all the graphic and disturbing imagery that will likely deter many viewers, it remains an impressively absorbing movie. I might need to rest after this one.
