I wasn't expecting much when this remarkable film appeared back in 1980. At the movie theater where I worked, it took over for *The Empire Strikes Back*. I figured I’d dislike it, but to my astonishment, it ended up being my top pick of the entire decade. If you haven't experienced it yet, prepare yourself and just go with it; every moment is valuable. Peter O'Toole delivers a career-best performance as Cross, who is both eccentric and exceptionally talented. Is he trying to eliminate Cameron for a few good shots? Or is he genuinely a kind person incapable of harming anyone? You won’t have an answer until close to the end. Essentially, Cameron is evading the authorities. He wanders onto a movie set and (possibly) leads to the death of one of the stunt performers. The director, Ely Cross, proposes that Cameron can avoid legal trouble if he steps in as a replacement for the fallen stunt man until filming wraps. Cameron accepts this offer. After that, nothing is straightforward. The film merges reality with the unreal aspects of movie production, and it’s likely to keep you entertained from beginning to end. Standout features include the music and Barbara Hershey's appearance. She has never looked more lovely, and her acting is superb. Filming took place at the Del Coronado Hotel in San Diego, which was also used for *Some Like It Hot*.
