I really wish I'd seen the initial installment from last year because I found myself struggling to recall what Maya (Madeleine Petsch) had gone through when she woke up in the hospital. It doesn’t take long before we are brought up to speed on how she and her meticulously groomed boyfriend, Jeff – who apparently consulted the screenplay and decided to stay home and trim his beard this time around – were viciously attacked by three local thugs wearing very basic face masks. He unfortunately didn't make it, but she made it to the hospital where the police officers were stunned by what she had to say. However, once her attackers realize that not only did she live through the ordeal, but is now in the local hospital, the groundwork is laid for a second chapter. What follows is increasingly absurd and verges on laughable, as she's chased through an almost deserted hospital and then into the woods toward the cabin where their suffering began. Naturally, having survived once before, she’s picked up some rudimentary survival techniques, but unsure who to trust in this close-knit community, what are her odds of making it against the three people who want to harm her – simply because she's still alive? The dialogue isn't worth noting, and the performances are overshadowed by the masks—which are supposedly plastic—while the increasingly dangerous situations feel far more perilous than boarding the Titanic back in 1912. What’s truly unsettling is that this sets up a third movie; otherwise, it’s just bad in every way imaginable.
