"The Strangers: Chapter One" lacks all the qualities that made the original "The Strangers" so unsettling and frightening. The antagonists are immediately hampered because they don’t benefit from the surprise they had before. We've witnessed this scenario repeatedly, as they move through darkness, watching their victims before striking with no pity or regret. The attempts at startling the audience fall flat due to predictable and unoriginal camera work, and it’s disappointing that the final killings are depicted rather than left to suggestion—a director can use the power of a viewer's mind to great effect in these kinds of scenes. It was unexpected that this film isn't considerably more dull or repetitive, but even so, it never escapes being an unremarkable and commonplace experience with just a handful of minor and unenthusiastic alterations to the approach used in the first movie.
