The Strangers: Chapter 1 didn’t quite live up to expectations. While it establishes an atmosphere of suspense and benefits from a powerful musical score, and is visually striking—particularly with the masks—the film ultimately falls short. It initially suggests brutal events are coming, but by the time the credits roll, I wasn't particularly impressed; it felt like standard horror movie material at its best. Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez deliver decent performances in their roles, although some of their characters make choices that feel frustratingly predictable—Ryan, played by Gutierrez, is a prime example. The dialogue also has its shortcomings. Overall, I’m disappointed because this had the potential to be much better. Sadly, it comes across as substandard. I am hoping Chapters 2 and 3 will offer improvements, but there's a chance they might just repeat what we’ve already seen, which would be unfortunate. It was still pleasant to see more people at the cinema than usual for this screening, even if I noticed more quiet disapproval than genuine scares from those around me.
