Following a shooting during a robbery that leaves an innocent man dead, "Travis" (Randolph Scott) goes to a quiet Arizona town and assumes a new name. However, his past quickly catches up with him when he runs into “Mourret” (George Macready), an old acquaintance with sinister intentions, who is planning to steal gold shipments from the local freight line. A devastating event prompts Travis to seek retribution, drawing on skills honed as a spy during the Civil War, allowing him to manipulate situations and outwit those around him. "Josie" (Claire Trevor), a woman with whom he once had a relationship, shows up hoping to rekindle things, but Travis finds himself drawn to “Shelby” (Joan Weldon), who oversees the gold transport operations. As tensions escalate, it’s difficult to determine where the most significant threat lies for "Travis." Could his problems stem more from a woman's rejection than from a criminal seeking revenge? The film unfolds as a rather standard drama, primarily remembered for early appearances by Lee Marvin and an elaborate fight sequence with Ernest Borgnine that results in considerable property damage. Certain photographic choices, originally intended for 3D presentation, can feel somewhat jarring, but Scott delivers his usual unremarkable performance, and the narrative follows familiar patterns, making it easy to pass through the eighty-minute runtime without leaving a lasting impression.
