This is a deliberately paced, unsettling science fiction/drama set in the 1970s. A husband and wife (played by Katharine Ross and Peter Masterson) relocate from New York City to Stepford, Connecticut. There, they discover that the local wives appear strangely detached from the women's liberation movement, seemingly focused solely on pleasing their husbands, maintaining their homes and gardens, and meticulously caring for their appearance. The husband becomes involved with a secretive men’s group in town, which raises suspicions about its true purpose. Paula Prentiss portrays Joanna’s eccentric new acquaintance, while Tina Louise takes on the role of another newcomer to the area. "The Stepford Wives," released in 1975, is a drama/mystery that evolves into science fiction/horror territory and has rightfully earned its place as an important film. The narrative holds your attention, and the movie proves to be enjoyable overall. It avoids the overly silly tone of the 2004 remake; this is a genuinely unsettling science fiction/drama with elements of satire. It's quite effective when compared to "Westworld" (1973), which doesn’t quite measure up. However, the film lingers too long in establishing the central mystery, and some of that dramatic buildup feels slow. Despite this, it remains a significant movie from the 70s, whose reputation is diminished by the later remake. The running time is one hour and fifty-five minutes. Filming occurred in Connecticut—specifically Norwalk, Westport, Darien, Weston, Fairfield, and Redding—with the exception of the initial scenes set in Manhattan. GRADE: B
