It's consistently surprising how much Melissa McCarthy elevates every project she's in when she steps outside of comedy. She remains skilled at physical gags and delivering lines with humor or irony, but her acting now has a depth that’s remarkable. This film could have easily earned a perfect rating from me if someone else had been cast. Chris O’Dowd begins with a limited role; his performance seems flat initially because the storyline requires it. His character is consumed by guilt and sadness, and that's what we see. However, he’s given an opportunity to evolve later on, and he rises to meet McCarthy’s complex portrayal. The rest of the cast generally does a solid job too. I don't want to exaggerate things; this isn't going to become one of my all-time favorites, but it is quite good, and I wouldn't switch channels if it started playing.
