This film didn’t entirely succeed in achieving its aims, but it certainly creates an unsettling experience – which seems to have been the goal. *The Stanford Prison Experiment* has a very contained and inexpensive aesthetic, which surprisingly works well for the overall atmosphere. The performances are inconsistent, and the movie feels longer than necessary. Billy Crudup delivers a strong performance as Dr. Philip Zimbardo, and the supporting cast is also quite good. However, the acting quality declines when focusing on the ‘inmates’; they aren't poor, but they don’t measure up to the standard of Crudup and his colleagues—even with some recognizable faces from *The Walking Dead*. Michael Angarano, as "John Wayne," does receive recognition for his work. It took me a while to become invested in what was happening, and the initial setup is a little shaky, but it eventually finds its footing in the middle section before concluding somewhat sluggishly; the runtime of 122 minutes feels excessive. Would I suggest seeing this? Yes. It’s worth checking out, although it had potential for more.
