Reno on The Stanford Prison Experiment

7/10 · Oct 4, 2016

The movie brought Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange' to mind, though I wouldn’t say they are alike in plot or theme; it simply evoked a similar feeling about the impact on those participating in an unusual experiment. While not as overtly violent as that film, there are moments some viewers might find unsettling. The majority of the movie seems to be set in one location, likely a studio, and that aspect was executed effectively, including both the writing and the directing. It's an uncommon film dealing with an unusual subject matter, making it something worth seeing, although perhaps not for everyone. The premise is interesting because it’s rooted in reality. The story starts when a professor at a university organizes an experiment over summer break, and some students volunteer to take part. This two-week project begins smoothly, but complications arise when a minor incident triggers a chain of events throughout the remaining days. What happens during those days and what ultimately comes from the experiment are revealed later on. There are several intense situations; I anticipated things might become unpleasant at times, but it remained grounded and concluded with positive intent. The performances are strong across the board, and especially noteworthy is the student cast. Few of them are well-known actors, yet they all receive a fairly even amount of screen time. It’s more than just an entertaining film; it's also a study of character. Because the story isn't typical, if you choose to watch it, be prepared for something different. I believe it’s worth checking out at least once. _7/10_
