I’m not sure if it was just my state of mind going into it, but after roughly thirty minutes, I honestly stopped caring about what happened to "Christian" (Claes Bang), or any of the other characters. He's one of those gallery owners who considers a glass of water on a shelf to be high art – that whole “emperor’s new clothes” situation. His newest display is meant to make people think about their obligations to each other, but his attention gets pulled away when he has his wallet stolen. With no phone and no money, he comes up with an unusual plan to recover them by slipping a demanding message into all of his neighbors' mail slots. It turns out that’s not the only odd thing he does as this slow-moving drama progresses from one poor choice to another over two and a half hours. Things get particularly strange when the entertainment – "Oleg" (Terry Notary) – at an expensive charity event goes horribly wrong, but there are other silly situations too, while he’s trying to handle a marketing campaign, navigate a strangely detached relationship with "Anne" (Elizabeth Moss, who seems stiff), and manage a frustrating child (Elijandro Edouard) who believes his family thinks he's the one who took their things. Bang does a good job of portraying a significant amount of unbearable self-importance as his pretentious character has all of his privileges stripped away and is confronted by a society that doesn’t care about him, and even openly criticizes his obvious hypocrisy. I liked the basic idea, but director Ruben Östlund lets himself get carried away too much for my taste, and I was simply bored when it finished. Perhaps a more concise edit could help sharpen the humor and the underlying message? It just didn’t work for me.
