The film benefits from polished visuals, thanks to the work of Choi Chan-min, and noteworthy production design—Taipei is used as a location for Beijing and North Korea—and offers an interesting look at Korean history after the Cold War period, specifically how South Korea moved toward greater democracy. A familiarity with Korean politics isn't really necessary to appreciate ‘The Spy Gone North’; what’s needed is simply an understanding of political suspense and filmmaking that creates tension.
