This Arthurian story feels like a missed opportunity, a disappointing take on the source material, though there's one amusing sequence featuring Lukas’ performance of "L'Apprenti Sorcier" alongside some rather overzealous mops. The plot involves “Merlin” containing "Morgana" (Alice Krige) within a layered construct resembling Russian nesting dolls. It then becomes “Balthazar’s” (Nicolas Cage) responsibility to safeguard this containment for countless years until a new, wise wizard appears. That person turns out to be the somewhat awkward "Dave" (Jay Baruchel), and he must be taught magic by the older man. Simultaneously, "Horvath" (Alfred Molina) is determined to unleash the sorceress, and with help from a rocker reminiscent of Billy Idol named "Drake Stone" (Toby Kebbell), he pursues them relentlessly. Credit where it’s due—the film moves at a brisk pace, the special effects are acceptable, and visually, things generally look decent. However, the performances aren't particularly strong; there’s no chemistry visible between Cage and his younger apprentice, Molina’s portrayal of the sophisticated and cold "Horvath" lacks impact, and most of the other actors simply fill space. Kebbell is an exception, seeming to enjoy himself. The writing isn't memorable, and at almost two hours, the movie feels excessively long. It's unfortunate because it had the potential to be good—it’s ultimately undermined by the creative choices made by Cage and Turteltaub.
