The professional reviewers didn't seem to like it much, but regular viewers rated it considerably higher, which isn’t unexpected given how those critics tend to dislike movies intended purely for enjoyment. I thought the film was definitely worth seeing and spending money on. The story wasn't particularly captivating, though I don’t think anyone would honestly expect something groundbreaking from this kind of movie. It's obviously geared towards a younger audience and people who enjoy magic and traditional adventure stories. The special effects were really impressive, and I appreciated the throwback to old-fashioned magical themes. Having Nicolas Cage in the lead role certainly didn't hurt either.
