Judy Holliday’s performances really struck me, especially considering the limited number of her nine credited films before breast cancer tragically ended her life at 43. She brought something special to the screen; her voice was completely distinctive and her comic timing bordered on brilliance. This movie proved to be a good fit for her talents—no pun intended—as she portrays an innocent woman who comes into possession of a cat and a small stake in a shady company, then decides to go to a shareholders' meeting, leading to what follows. The film suggests that if powerful companies develop relationships with individual investors, the ordinary people who are essential to their survival, then someone decent can triumph within the world of large American corporations. Holliday’s wonderful personality made her ideal for the part. While the romantic subplot between her character and Paul Douglas was a smaller but significant element, I discovered this screwball comedy in an inexpensive Mill Creek collection of ‘Classic Romances,’ which I bought mainly to see another one of Holliday's performances. I hold her work in very high regard. She entered the world on June 21, 1921—the summer solstice—and would be celebrating her 95th birthday this summer if she were still here. My only regret is that she could have lived to see this tribute from a devoted admirer of her artistry.
