It’s possible that a film's impact comes not just from what’s on screen, but also from the personal recollections it brings up. I remember my mother always made an effort for us to watch this one every Christmas, and we likely saw it annually for roughly 30 years. The story is straightforward: a young boy creates a snowman who then springs to life and takes him through various experiences on Christmas Eve—including a dance with Santa—before the return of everyday life the following morning. Apart from an introduction by David Bowie, the soundtrack is dominated by Howard Blake's wonderful music (with contributions from Peter Auty), and the animation has a playful, delightful quality. Certainly, there are more advanced animated features available now, nearly 40 years after its release; however, this one possesses a certain appeal and purity that allows it to remain enjoyable over time.
