The story unfolds in 1953, centering on a bush pilot operating out of Yellowknife who accepts what seems like a standard job within the Queen Maud Gulf region—now part of Nunavut. Following a crash that leaves him stranded with an unwell Inuk girl, their prospects for survival appear bleak. James Cromwell portrays the pilot’s employer in Yellowknife. “The Snow Walker,” released in 2004, is a survival film directed by Charles Martin Smith, whose experience shooting “Never Cry Wolf” earlier in his career likely proved valuable when filming in such an isolated northern location. The movie draws its inspiration from a short story penned by Farley Mowat, who also had a role in “Never Cry Wolf.” While the scenery possesses a certain stark beauty, I found it somewhat lacking in depth. However, the performances are believable. Those drawn to authentic and harsh survival narratives will probably discover elements they like. It shares some of the quietness seen in "Limbo," but doesn't offer the excitement you find in “The Edge.” Although not as strong as either of those films, it’s better than "Anything to Survive." The film has a running time of 1 hour and 49 minutes and was filmed across several locations including Churchill, Manitoba (for tundra shots); Rankin Inlet, Nunavut; Merritt, British Columbia (the caribou hunt scenes); and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District in British Columbia.
