The film begins in a way very similar to the initial installment, sharing its structure of alternating between the Smurfs' experiences and the Winslows’ story—the human family from New York. This time, the central narrative focuses on Smurfette and how her background as Gargamel’s creation shapes her life. The plot unfolds in a manner reminiscent of the first movie: the Smurfs must locate and confront Gargamel to rescue Smurfette, while Patrick Winslow needs to understand what "family" can mean. It's left uncertain whether Smurfette even desires to return or if Patrick truly wants a more significant role with his extended family. Certain aspects of this film were unexpectedly pleasant. Smurfette is quite likable in this installment, as are the new characters, Vexy and Hackus. The Smurfs' adventures are genuinely humorous and touching; however, I found the human storyline to be acceptable and appropriate, but somewhat tiring because the people—particularly Patrick—seemed determined to act rudely. Consistent with the movies’ theme, both sides need to grasp the core idea: that family isn't necessarily about birth, but rather the individuals who offer love and support. This is a worthwhile message that is handled effectively, at least within the Smurfs’ portion of the story. The progression of Smurfette's connections with the others is heartwarming, creating moments that are genuinely emotional—alternating between happiness and sadness—and the movie does a better job of inspiring feelings of concern and compassion than its predecessor; I appreciated that. Once again, Gargamel’s portrayal was exaggerated and entertaining. However, as in the first film, while the Winslow's storyline is more significant emotionally than before, it could have been omitted entirely without impacting the movie. Nevertheless, it’s a charming family film about recognizing those who love and care for you as your true family! <3 Smurfette, Vexy, and Gargamel are standouts here!
