It's rare to come across a movie featuring lyrics that rhyme "liver" with "quiver," or one that includes Emperor Napoleon’s final words – “so long!” – before his departure to Elbe. "Niki" (Maurice Chevalier) portrays a cheerful military officer who is in love with "Franzi" (Claudette Colbert), and their lives seem promising until the princess "Anna" (Miriam Hopkins) visits, creating complications. A smile directed at her as she passed by with her father, the King (George Barbier), incenses His Majesty, leading to “Niki's” summons. Fortunately, he’s quick-witted and literate, avoiding a dire fate and instead becoming the princess's favorite. Soon, wedding preparations begin, and he finds himself transported to his homeland of Flausenthurm as a married man. "Franzi" follows, attempting to maintain a secret affair, but “Anna” is perceptive and a peculiar kind of love triangle emerges as the two women and their bewildered protagonist attempt to resolve matters in an unconventional way. Oscar Straus and Clifford Grey composed the musical numbers; while not particularly memorable on their own, they offer Chevalier opportunities to smile broadly, occasionally wink, and allow Colbert and Hopkins to showcase their talents. The comedy unfolds at a relaxed pace, and the film’s visual style resembles that of "Prisoner of Zenda." While the plot may feel familiar, it possesses considerable charm and is deserving of viewing.
