This atmospheric coastal horror film deserves more recognition. A group of two couples in their thirties decides to spend a vacation on a remote island when a storm rolls in, leading to a series of mysterious deaths. Kay, portrayed by Sarah Kendall, is an artist struggling with inner turmoil who claims she experiences her nightmares before they become reality. While “The Slayer” (1982), also known as "Nightmare Island," might be labeled a slasher film, it’s better described as a mystery-horror that creates a chilling atmosphere reminiscent of a secluded island, similar to the feel of “The Shuttered Room” (1967). It incorporates elements of moody coastal horror like “The Fog” (1980), although "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" (1998) utilized a stormy island setting for a more standard slasher approach. The production quality is quite impressive considering the era, and the musical score stands out as particularly well done. Carol Kottenbrook’s performance as Brooke is memorable, with her looking stylish in jeans. Kendall delivers a strong acting performance as the troubled main character. The villain, known as “the slayer,” is frighteningly grotesque, but appears sparingly on screen. Despite having a twist ending, the film remains puzzling and elusive. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 29 minutes and was filmed in Tybee Island, Georgia, and the surrounding area of Savannah. GRADE: B
