The film’s unusual title, along with the significant financial backing from European cinema organizations, may be the only things that make this rather detached Western stick in your mind. The story revolves around the mysterious "Commodore" (Rutger Hauer), who hires the brothers “Eli” (John C. Reilly) and “Charlie” (Joaquin Phoenix) to locate “Kermit Warm” (Riz Ahmed), a quiet prospector accused of theft. This isn't their first assignment for him, and both are wary of their employer’s dealings – but the pay is good, and they generally like what they do. Whatever was taken appears important enough that "Morris" (Jake Gyllenhaal) has also been brought in to help, and he discovers their target heading toward San Francisco. He initially presents himself as a friend, but it soon becomes clear he’s working with the “Sisters.” But why? What did he steal to warrant so much effort to recover him? As that question is resolved, could we see shifts in the perspectives of those pursuing him? Advertised as a dark comedy, I didn't find many laughs, and neither did I feel any real connection between Reilly and Phoenix, as the plot seemed constructed to drift instead of make an impression. While there are some well-executed action sequences, it demonstrates just how harsh life was during the westward expansion and prospecting era. However, the narrative seems to be striving for a more contemplative tone rather than focusing on action, which ultimately didn’t work for me. Perhaps trimming about twenty minutes would have helped, eliminating some of the seemingly endless conversations that didn't contribute much to the plot. It proved to be disappointing.
