The film chronicles Jacques Cousteau’s expeditions as he and his team journey across the globe from their mobile research facility, the "Calypso," to investigate the ocean's depths. He guides viewers to previously unseen locations in the water, areas so dark that even cameras had never penetrated before, though not reaching the very bottom. The visuals provided many audiences with their initial exposure to whales, porpoises, large turtles, sharks—and a variety of other creatures within their natural habitats, which isn't always readily accessible. However, some of Cousteau’s practices are difficult to accept. Actions like using explosives to stun fish for population counts or leaving animals stranded on the shore to die before examination were supposedly justified "in the name of science." Although it is clear that this group held a deep appreciation and reverence for nature, they also possessed a sense of human dominance over it, and at times I found myself disliking both Cousteau himself and his methods. Nevertheless, during the period in which this was created, the pursuit of understanding often prioritized results above ethical considerations, and undoubtedly some of his remarkable findings have contributed to more responsible research practices moving forward. There’s no denying that Cousteau was a pioneer; his ingenuity in adapting technology to allow us to explore deeper and safer environments offers a captivating glimpse into a world untouched by human interference. It's certainly not the style Sir David Attenborough employs today, but considering the era it was produced, this is an intriguing and skillfully photographed exploration of what lies hidden.
