A story centered on murder, retribution, and legal proceedings unfolds within the rugged landscape of the northern Great Lakes area. The proprietor of a wildlife refuge struggling with alcoholism (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and the newly appointed Sheriff of a Minnesota county (Annabelle Wallis) uncover indications that someone might be targeting young women. The man seeks revenge, while the woman prioritizes justice, all while grappling with concerns about her younger brother’s possible connection to the events (Hero Fiennes). Zahn McClarnon, Melanie Scrofano and Shaun Smyth also appear in the cast. "The Silencing" (2020) is a wilderness crime mystery/thriller similar to “The Vanished” (2020), but incorporating aspects reminiscent of “Kiss the Girls” (1997). Some reviewers are quick to highlight perceived shortcomings, however, nearly every detail makes sense if you’re willing to use your imagination. It does contain familiar cinematic tropes, like those seen in the final portions of "A Simple Plan" (1998) and “The Virtuoso” (2021), which is common within this kind of film. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau portrays a believable leading man, and Annabelle Wallis is always welcome on screen. The story contains unexpected twists alongside its predictable elements. A positive aspect is that the somber narrative maintains an element of suspense. The beautiful visuals are also noteworthy. The film’s length is 1 hour, 33 minutes, and filming took place in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, approximately an hour's drive west of North Bay. GRADE: B
