The Silence puts a stop to all thought processes, essentially lulling viewers into a quiet slumber. “Shhhh! Be vewy vewy quiet! I’m hunting carnivewous ancient bats!”. Even the smallest sounds will summon a group of bat demons resembling ‘Pitch Black’ and ‘Doctor Who’, ready to scratch, bite, and gnaw at your flesh. Apparently based on a novel, but any sense of originality was discarded when films like ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘Bird Box’ were already exploiting this “sound prevention” horror trend. It's essentially those two movies combined. Ancient bat creatures are unleashed from an unknown cave system and begin terrorizing North America, as we follow a family attempting to survive and reach safety. The problem is that the family seems incredibly calm and relaxed during this crisis, which completely removes any feeling of danger due to their detached acting and careless behavior. Honestly! Leonetti does his best to imitate other similar films, while veteran actor Tucci wanders around looking bored and wanting to escape what he clearly sees as a torturous nightmare. The film is full of frustratingly illogical plot points and character decisions, which completely kills any sense of tension. It's not even in neutral anymore; it’s going backward! Examples include giving a handgun to an uncle who is then abandoned to die, the teenage son conveniently switching cars just before one goes off the road, iPhones instantly silencing themselves when submerged in water for only three seconds, and bringing a loud dog along. That last point, coupled with an unnecessary scene showing people shunning a mother and baby because they’re making too much noise, is simply meant to highlight how awful humans can be. Yes, humans are bad, and that's what this film wants you to know. You won’t be frightened by the visually uninspired bat creatures; it’s the characters who will annoy you. Need more evidence? Consider the entire third act. The father and daughter wander off to a pharmacy, somehow making no noise along the way, where they encounter a mentally unstable preacher who wants to impregnate young girls to repopulate the world and cut out their tongues (afterward, of course...). What?! That came completely out of nowhere, even flying angels wouldn’t have predicted that. The story constantly shifts its focus, making an already dull premise even more tedious. Aside from one sacrifice near the end that had a touch of emotional weight, The Silence offers nothing new to this now tired horror concept. The actors seemed unmotivated, the direction was shaky, and the number of scares was, well, insufficient. Oh wait, it ends with the daughter becoming a survivalist-style Lara Croft and hunting down these winged creatures! No thanks! Just watch ‘A Quiet Place’ instead...
